Folk Singing in Blaxhall
Cyril Poacher, Wicketts Richardson and many other of our now departed oldtimers brought considerable fame to Blaxhall, and The Ship Inn, in the 1950s - 1970s when their rich tradition of folk singing - stretching back into the previous century - resulted in several visits to the village by various individuals and organisations who wished to record this musical heritage before it was for ever.
Various extensive notes and anecdotes from these visits are still in existence, some excellent examples of which can be found on this website. Much of the recorded material also still remains, although of course availability varies: The BBC are currently transferring their old recordings to cd as part of an ongoing presevation process, while a number of have compilation cds have recently become available that include some songs recorded by Cyril Poacher, links to some of which can be found below. Indeed, on this website you can download some songs recorded in the ship back in 1973 here.
