Charles Woolnough

Area map

Charles was born in London in 1896 to Mary Ann Woolnough, who was in service in the capital at the the time. We believe that Charles was raised, at least partially, by his grandparents William and Sarah.

Having enlisted at Snape in May 1915 Charles was serving as a private in the 2nd Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment when he was killed on the 28th March 1918. That day two companies of the 2nd Battalion became cut off during the German offensive and made a stoic stand holding up the enemy advance along the road from Wancourt to Tilloy. His name is one of 35,000 on the Arras memorial to Commonwealth casualties suffered in the area between 1916-1918 that have no known grave.
