Horace Scarce

Area map

Horace was born in Blaxhall in 1890 to Lewis & Mary Ann. The cousin of Somme victim Ernest, Horace served as a gunner in D Battery of the 2nd Seige Artillery Resrve Brigade of the Royal Garrison Artillery.

Horace died on th 17th of November 1918 (6 days after the end armistice) in Catterick Military Hospital, Yorkshire and is buried in the churchyard at the nearby village of Hipswell. Given the date and place of Horace's passing it seems probable that he died either from a long standing troublesome/infected wound or from the flu epidemic that was beginning to rage through Europe.
