William James Hammond

Private, 9th Battalion Suffolk Regiment. Killed 24th November 1915.

William was born in Blaxhall in 1894 to George & Ellen. The older brother of Arthur, he also found himself serving in the British 6th Division in the autumn of 1915, as a private in the Suffolk Regiment’s 9th Battalion.

Like young Arthur, William too was to meet his end in the mud of Flanders, being killed somewhere near Ypres just 12 weeks after his brother, on the 24th of November 1915. No body having been found, William’s is one of the 54,000 names on the Menin Gate memorial to the missing.
